The Master MOVIE REVIEW

A very smart movie with equally strong performances makes this one a gem that deserves more than one viewing.

The Master follows director Paul Thomas Anderson's formula for making a smart and successful film once again.  Like the majority of his previous work, Anderson's movies are visually stunning, have strong performances, and may require multiple viewings to understand everything.  And thanks to Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman we get amazing performances that deserves award recognition.  The story follows Freddie Quell (Phoenix), a troubled Navy veteran who once he returns home from war is uncertain of what his future holds.  After concocting a booze that nearly kills a fellow migrant worker in the cabbage fields that he works, Freddie leaves and stumbles across a yacht owned by a writer named Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman).  We later find out that Dodd is the leader of a group known as The Cause.  Dodd soon realizes how troubled Freddie is and takes him under his wing.  Along the way, we get many outbursts from Freddie that really show off how great of an actor Phoenix is and there are 3 scenes with Phoenix and Hoffman that will leave you saying "wow".  The performances from these two actors are amazing and are worthy of an Oscar nominations with a win for Joaquin. This film is one of this year's best film and is up there with  Anderson's best.
