The fourth installment of this family franchise delivers more of the same, but fails to bring the fun.
Ice Age: Continental Drift is the fourth in the series, and maybe should be the last. Despite adding even more voices to the already full cast, it still doesn't help the story. The movie begins with Scrat the squirrel chasing after yet another acorn, which causes a crack in the ice which leads to all of the continents splitting apart. Which as a result separates Manny the mammoth (Ray Romano), Diego the sabre tooth tiger (Denis Leary), Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo), and Sid's Grandma (Wanda Sykes) from their friends and families. As they drift away, they come across a group of "pirates" led by Captain Gutt (Peter Dinklage), a primate, who want our main character's piece of ice. With the pirates hot on their trail, Manny and company must survive as they try to make it back home.
All of the voice work and animation is fine, but the story just isn't very exciting. It's missing the fun that
made this and other family franchises popular and that's a shame. I enjoyed Peter Dinklage's voice as Captian Gutt and thought he was a good villain. But a lot of the story back at home involving Manny's daughter Peaches abandoning her friends to fit in with the cool kids felt forced and corny. Life lessons are fine to have in movies like these, but you got to remember to make it fun for the whole family. With Ice Age: Continental Drift they didn't.
...AND SIMPLY PUT RENT IT FOR THE KIDS. C
