Much grittier and more personal this time around, Bond may have his best hand he's ever been dealt.
Skyfall is the 23rd Bond film in its 50 year run and what a way to celebrate. We have a great director in Sam Mendes, a great villain in Javier Bardem, to me the best James Bond in Daniel Craig, and quite frankly the best Bond film to date.
Skyfall begins with Bond (Daniel Craig) on a mission in Istanbul chasing after a mercenary who has stolen a hard drive with crucial information about all undercover NATO agents. They end up on top of a moving train fighting it out. M (Judi Dench), who is listening to all of the events as they unfold tells Eve (Naomie Harris), another agent on the mission, to "take the shot" before the suspect gets a chance to escape. She misfires and hits Bond who falls and is believed to be dead. Time has now passed and M has a new boss named Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), who tells M she is getting older and wants her to retire. The MI6 computers are soon hacked and there is an explosion at the MI6 offices killing 8 employees. The news brings Bond, who has been using his death as a retirement, back. Bond follows a lead, which takes him to Shanghai in search of the mercenary who stole the hard drive in order to find who's behind everything that's been going on. Bond meets Sévérine (Bérénice Lim Marlohe), a woman who says she'll help him if he kills her employer, Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem). Silva is the man behind it all and also has a history with M and the MI6.
This film is much darker and grittier than the previous installments, which is a little different than what we're used to, but in my opinion makes it better. Daniel Craig is back after a not so great second film, but returns to the Bond we saw and loved in Casino Royale. Also returning, we have Judi Dench, who has been great in the role thus far, get a lot more screen time and she delivers yet again. Despite Craig and Dench being great, it is Javier Bardem who is the star here. In his first villain role since No Country for Old Men, he goes for the complete opposite type of villain and still pulls it off. In Skyfall, he is a giddy but completely twisted and to me, perfect as a Bond villain. The two new Bond girls, Naomie Harris and Bérénice Lim Marlohe, are fine when they're on the screen, but there isn't too much screen time given to them in order to really standout. The film doesn't have as much action as the previous two Craig Bond films, but the suspense is at an all time high and it works. There's not really anything I had to complain about. The visuals were great, the acting was great, and the story was great. Daniel Craig is now the leading man in my top 2 Bond films.
